Betty
Morrell is a prolific singer/songwriter who likes to dabble in a
wide range of styles, including folk, country, jazz, blues, theatre
and children’s music. Originally from Los Angeles, Betty sang, both
solo and with a couple of her sisters, in coffee houses and colleges
in California during her high school and college years, mostly
concentrating on folk music. She comes from a family of 10 girls and
lots of music. Her father played in both an orchestra and in a
country band, and her mother studied opera, but also sang with the
orchestra in the early years. Her grandfather conducted and played
in a vaudeville orchestra, then wrote, arranged and conducted music
for CBS television for 55 years. Lots of music…and lots of singing!
Betty keeps busy with the small company she owns in Manassas, VA
which concentrates on designing ergonomic and space efficient
computer environments for the military and medical industries.
Betty lives in Nokesville on a small piece of property that lends
itself well to the Songwriter Picnics she hosts every summer. She is
a past President of the Songwriters Association of Washington and is
currently the co-coordinator for the NSAI ( Nashville Songwriters
Association, International) workshop in the Washington DC area.
She’s also a member of Focus and Folk Alliance, both organizations
aimed at promoting Folk Music.
Her vocal style could best be described as “easy listening” and she
writes in a conversational style that pulls you in. You can see her
at a variety of open mikes around the Northern Virginia/ Metro DC
area. |
